Girum Bekele

Good Chance first met circus artist and performer Girum in Calais in 2016, when he was drawn to the music emanating from the very first temporary Theatre of Hope – our original Dome.

He brought an endlessly positive outlook and a bundle of captivating performance skills and we’re proud to have collaborated with him ever since.

Girum’s passion for circus arts was ignited when a juggler visited his Ethiopian village. At the age of 17, he was inspired to begin juggling, and has since gained confidence and huge pleasure from developing a number of circus skills. He continues to expand his repertoire and hopes one day to be the premier performer of a new trick!

Early Work

He began his acting career in The Jungle, for which he participated in many of the R&D workshops as a key member of the ensemble and collaborator. He went on to perform the role of Yohannes at the Young Vic and in London’s West End.

Since then, he has worked for Kneehigh and Pipeline Theatre and performed in plays throughout the UK. He was also recently featured as a fire-breather and dancer in Netflix’s The Crown.

Girum performs on the Cornwall coast at a Kneehigh Theatre R&D, October 2020

The Walk 2021

In 2021, Girum was part of The Walk as one of the puppeteers of Little Amal, the 3.5 metre tall puppet of a young refugee girl who walked 8000km from Turkey to the UK: a vital part of the workshops for this ambitious performance art piece and a crucial role in this travelling festival of art and hope.
