ARTIST DEVELOPMENT
VISUAL ART
We commission and nuture talented artists working across the visual arts to create powerful and innovative new work that explores and interrogates the complexities of the world we live in.
Home, Migration, Belonging
12th April - 2nd May 2022, Museum of the Home
Three artists with histories and heritages of migration - Andrea Ling, Basel Zaraa and Hamed Moradi - explored through their provocative installations what it means to leave a home and what it means to build a new one.
In 2020, Good Chance commissioned three artists to develop new works that are powerful, original and relevant to the times we are living in.
The Good Chance Ensemble Commissions responded to the challenges faced by freelance artists during the pandemic by offering our commissioned artists financial input and bespoke mentorship with an experienced artist in the relevant field, to enable the creation of brilliant new art.
All three pieces: PACHA, Dear Laila and Passage were each striking interrogations of vital questions of our time - how can we live side by side in this new world? How do we live in harmony with the natural world? When you have to leave your home, what does it mean to make a new one in this country?
Audiences encountered portraits of people who have sought asylum in the UK, drawing on Hamed Moradi’s own experience of claiming refuge in this country.
They entered a model recreation of Basel Zaraa’s destroyed family home in Yarmouk refugee camp, Damascus.
And were immersed in soundscapes created by Andrea Ling alongside local Hackney residents from the global south, exploring the climate crisis using a pioneering touch-technology installed in plants.
Each artist has worked with a mentor in their field - sound designer Gareth Fry, reportage artist George Butler and set designer Jeremy Herbert.
